Good practices in managing cattle suppliers

As part of the studies to develop this Protocol, it was identified other less common criteria cited by companies and civil society organisations in their cattle supply chain agendas to tackle deforestation in Cerrado or other Brazilian biomes. They have not been included as the main criteria described on the first pages of this document, because of different reasons (not systematically available, use of non-official data sources or parameters difficult to be monitored with current available data, etc.).

Technical note - Protocol implementation test results - September 2022

In 2022, six companies voluntarily took part in a pilot implementation of the Cerrado Protocol. These companies evaluated their suppliers in the Cerrado in relation to the criteria of Indigenous Lands, Conservation Units, and environmental embargoes, and in relation to overlaps with polygons of deforestation and conversion of native vegetation using Prodes Cerrado.

Technical analysis of the potential impact of implementing the Protocol - October 2021

The Voluntary Monitoring Protocol for Cattle Suppliers in the Cerrado (Cerrado Protocol) sheds light on the need for governance and structure across the cattle sector in Brazil in order to reach a common agreement. This study shows the impact of the parameters defined for monitoring rural cattle properties in the Cerrado on a range of criteria related to deforestation, indigenous land, conservation units, Quilombola land and environmental embargoes imposed by Ibama (Brazil’s environment agency).

Comparative analysis in the beef value chain: setting the bar to create the Voluntary Monitoring Protocol for Cattle Suppliers in the Cerrado

The Cerrado biome has gained increased visibility and importance in public commitments made by companies in the cattle supply chain. This study shows that the majority of companies and non-governmental initiatives analysed have made commitments not to expand on converted land in the biome; however, there is a lack of alignment in terms of the criteria and parameters used.
